Most aircraft will need some source of power to get them airborne!

Ok, none of mine have anything like as beautiful as this awesome RCS 215 5-cylinder radial, but I still manage to get the odd aircraft into the air...

Thunder Tiger Pro 46

The Pro 46 by Thunder Tiger is a Schnuerle-ported glow engine with dual ball-bearing support for the crank, and ABC piston/cylinder construction. These features should make it a powerful, reliable, long-lasting engine. It is rated at 1.43 horsepower with a recommended operating range of 2,500 to 14,000 RPM (red line 17,000 RPM).

This engine has an excellent reputation for easy, smooth operation, reliability, and long life. I got this one specifically for the Kadet. Note the new, angled jet which should help keep my fingers out of the prop!

First time out, with 5:1 Methanol/Castrol-M in the tank, it started on the 2nd flip of a chicken-stick and ran well for a full tank on the ground for break-in. Then it took to the air where it pulled like a trooper! Early days, but this definately looks a winner!

Magnum XL80-RFS
Magnum 80 Ringed Four-stroke

This is an 80-sized, ringed four-stroke by Magnum. I have a couple of these, one in the Fokker, and another awaiting completion of the Mew Gull.

This engine runs well, and produces plenty of power and torque. I run a 14x6 prop on the Fokker, which is an inch bigger than recommended by the manufacturer. But the engine handles it with style!

Special thanks to my friend Digital Man for transporting the first of these to Barbados for me. It proverd such a good engine, I acquired another later!

Saito FA-56 Golden Knight

This beautiful little four-stroke engine was originally purchased to power the Gee Bee Z by Adrian Page. So far, I have not gotten around to actually acquiring the Adrian Page kit (but definately will, as soon as I can). In the mean time, this motor powers the Elder 40.

It broke in well, runs smoothly and very reliably, pulls strongly, and is very economical. It will fly the elder for over forty minutes on the standard 10-oz. tank!

Zagi Speed-400 6-volt
Speed-400 motor for Zagi series aircraft

The Zagi 400 and 400-X are powered by a little Speed-400 class motor rated at six volts. The 400-X uses 8 cells at 9.6 volts (nominal). I wonder if I could use more cells, say 9 or 10?

Since the Zagi is a pusher configuration, the motor is connected in reverse. I prefer to use a Deans plug between the ESC and the motor, so I just wire the plug on the motor for reverse polarity.

Grand Wing Servo IPS STD-B

The Pico Stick S and the Tiger Moth from Grand Wing Servo come with this tiny motor/gearbox combo. Cute, isn't it?

The Pico Stick was junk, but the Tiggie flies well with this motor, providing the wind is light and you power it with zeven cells instead of the recommended six!

Zagi Cell Packs
Zagi 1,700 & 1,400 mAh Cell Packs

The Zagi 400-X comes with a 1,700 mAh cell pack dressed in black. Spares cost $45 and obviously, an enthusiastic pilot will want more than a single pack!

Riding to the rescue, comes the 1,400 mAh pack for $28 each. I was a little hesitant at first, but my initial test flight ran 25 minutes without undue nursing of the throttle and no thermalling or anything like that. (The glow-power brigade were all standing around muttering things like "I never knew...") And performance seemed a little better, probably due to the slightly reduced weight of the pack. I now have three of these!

Using the stopwatch feature of my 8U and with careful throttle management, I have flown my 400X for 32:55 on a 1,700 mAh pack! Must time a 1,400 mAh pack and see what sort of time I get...

I added the red trim to the packs with Zagi coloured packing tape to increase visibility in the "recovery phase" of an energetic landing....

Bungee Rubber

Great for getting small gliders (like the Zagi 3C) into the air, is Mandrel Dipped rubber "Bungee" tubing from Hollyday Designs. This is incredible stuff; far more stretchy and elastic than the regular extruded rubber tubing. And the folks at Hollyday Designs take your satisfaction very seriously, as I can attest. Throw away your old hi-start and get some of this stuff! Available in a choice of sizes at a good price, and like I said, these folks are determined that you will be satisfied.
