Bungee Launching - Slope-on-a-rope

Bungee Launching - Slope-on-a-rope

Stretching the bungee

Using a Hi-Start, you can launch your glider to quite an altitude! A Hi-Start consists of about 100' of "bungee" rubber, and maybe 400' of nylon cord. I use a smaller version (sometimes called an Up-Start), with 50' of rubber and 150' of nylon. A red pennant eases recovery of the nylon after launch, and assists in the tow-ring drop too!

With the bungee end tied to a stake and the nylon end attached to a tow-hook on the bottom of the glider, you are ready to go. Walk downwind until the bungee rubber is tightly stretched and release the glider into the wind. The contracting rubber accelerates the glider and hurls it skyward.

Slope-on-a-rope

Here's a picture of some old fart holding a Zagi 3C, ready to launch!

Aircraft held high, wings level, bungee tightly stretched hand on the controls, pennant blowing back along the line (shows that the aircraft is actually facing into the wind), and friendly black-bellied sheep waiting to give encouraging "Baa-aa-aa"s... Let's do it!

Bungee tight, ready for launch!

Going up!

Going up!

And sideways a bit, too! A little crosswind perhaps? Never mind. A steady hand on the controls and she flies on and up until she flies right off the tow-ring.

Once it flies off the tow-ring, your glider is now in free-flight.

The Zagi 3C is a "sloper" but if you don't have a slope handy, the bungee will get you airborne. However, the 3C isn't as light as a thermaller, so it won't stay up there for ever!

And away we go...

What goes up must come down

What goes up must come down.

As the altitude bleeds off, you circle around and try to get it in on the grass instead of the sugar cane!

It helps to have an enthusiastic recovery team!

My family are not particularly interested in my R/C Hobby, and pay little attention to my goings-on. occasionally, usually in response to my plea for a photographic assistant, I will acquire a helper or two for a brief time. Naturally, I work them like dogs...
